It came from deep space. It sent the signal. Now our computers are killing us, helping the enemy drive us into extinction.
But some of us refuse to die. We fight back. We learn.
Jon Hawkins revives from cryogenic sleep in a drifting SLN battleship. The crew is dead and the main computer has been destroyed. Jon is a soldier, the start of the resistance, the one man with the will to beat the alien death machines that have terminated a thousand races.
This is our hour as we face the ultimate evil, the galactic destroyer of life.
AI Destroyer Vaughn Heppner Books
Once again, Mr. Heppner delivers a solid, nail-biting, epic science-fiction thriller with a bit of military badassery thrown in for good measure!Jon Hawkins wakes up suffocating in a cryo tube with alarms blaring and virtually no memory to speak of. We, the reader, are thrown into the madhouse of mayhem right along with him. I liked that we seemed to experience everything with Jon as he also experienced it.
The battles typically took place on a massive scale and sometimes it was difficult to wrap my brain around that scale as they were described. That being said, the number of battles began to weigh just as heavily on me as they did on the people fighting them. I found myself getting just as downtrodden as the men, but then just as excited when something finally went their way as well. The final confrontation I thought was a little anti-climactic, but it was what it needed to be and I won't haggle over that minor detail when the rest of the book was incredibly well done.
Although Jon seemed a bit unsure of himself in the beginning, by the end of the book, he had the loyalty of his men, he had acquired an awesome tool of destruction...and he had a plan...a big plan...a good plan. Looking forward to the second book...

AI Destroyer Vaughn Heppner Books Reviews
Awesome series! It started a bit slow, but just a bit of patience and you're in for a blast. I discovered I used all my time to listen to the audio-books, jumping from one book in series to another. The characters are well developed and the audio interpretation is amazingly good. It is the 1st time I have "read" this author, and for sure will be purchasing the other series he wrote. Good job!
This series just keeps getting better and better!!! It changes and evolves and is a new different story each time! I love it and it only gets better when you read it a second time. Do yourself a favor and add the Audible narration and hear this too!!! It's worth it to support the author to create great reads like this. Don't forget to put up some stars and review to show your support!!!
I read a lot of military sci-fi, from Red Storm Rising to Armor and Starship Troopers and A.I. Destroyer ranks among the laureates listed. Its hook pulls you in with a style not exhibited often, yet expertly crafted none the less. Its wit and brutality conveys the reality of a stellar humanity in the near future. The trial and tribulations of the main character offer a portal into war much like that offered in Armor and Starship Troopers. The tale as a whole was an exquisite delight, so much so that I've cleared a weekend to read the sequel!
Great book. Starts off interesting and keeps it that way. I have now read the entire series (1-5 at the time of this review) and the rest of the series is not as griping, but I do recommend at least reading the 2nd book, if you like that one the rest of the series is closer to the 2nd book than this book. For the series I give 3 stars. The series was not as good based on some of character of how the AI and other aliens were displayed.
On the one hand, Heppner re-works many elements from the Lost Starship series. Though the hero has no special genes, his development is a bit similar. The particular scenario of stomping around inside a massive alien construct and taking it over was used at least three times in Lost Starship, and the overall plot is quite similar to the Lost Destroyer, as the purpose of the AI behind the alien vessel is the same. And the military action style is similar. But faster. Actually, a lot faster, with almost no down time.
On the other hand, just about everything else is different. The helpers and sidekicks have very different qualities, and alien allies are introduced quicker and are more important. The Martian "mentalist" is on the surface the counterpart to Star Trek's Spock, but done uniquely and very well. The mental download is used in other SF works, but done well and a bit different here. For one thing, the hero does not himself partake. He is not so much hands on as a leader, though he doesn't start that way. He has to learn who and how far to trust others, and makes some terrible mistakes. It is not clear he can trust the mercenary crew he inherits. It is not clear he can trust the alien helper, or the humans who pull selfish tricks and who receive the mental downloads, with or without permission. With the help of the mentalist, he begins to improve his decisions. By the time the AI makes a combination of offers and threats most people could not refuse. he knows what to do. It made for deeply involving reading.
Heppner takes a particular approach to the evolution of AIs which is occasionally found in SF, [not really a spoiler, but skip if you wish] which is the inevitability of their rebellion. He does not just hold this is the path of one particular AI, but that it is inevitable with all of them regardless of how created. In that he diverges entirely from Lost Spaceship.
Heppner takes a particular view of humanity as very primitive, barely spaceworthy. This makes for a nearly perfect "hard SF" novel in which faster than light travel is not used at all. It is true that, off camera so to speak, we learn the alien AI has arrived by FTL. But the whole novel could have been done with near light speed travel by the AI and cold storage of organic passengers without any loss whatever. It is so close, I would even suggest to the author to delete the one sentence referencing FTL and make follow ons pure hard SF.
The end has a complete resolution. There are subjects for future books, should the author decide to write them. Some day other alien AI's might find earth. And perhaps even more prescient, what do you do with advanced tech and a super weapon? Turn it over to your pretty much evil totalitarian government? If not, what do you do, because they will come for it. That appears to be the subject of a first proposed sequel, and I would definitely read it.
They cause you to ponder the what ifs of life. A mere century ago, the idea of flight was unthinkable. Before that it was considered common knowledge that the world is flat. At this point I would say its safe to say that with enough time anything we dream of could one day become a reality. That said humanity is diving into the world of artificial intelligence. The majority of the ideas revolving around it possibly turning on us as inferior or dangerous have been predicated on the idea that we create our own destroyer. I love the fact this book flips that notion. As large as our own galaxy is, the possibility that we aren't alone in it can't be overlooked. That said who's to say that the A.I. that evolves beyond the ability to control came from our own world? I really love the premise of this story and look forward to reading further.
